Ground Zero.
They built the most beautiful destruction here. The most beautiful
crime. The most artful theft. And no one really knows what they
took.
They made a hole here. Twelve feet deep in some places. They made
steel vaporize here. They made the desert temperatures rise over
a ten mile radius here. They made wind and clouds here. They made
the desert sand fuse into a new indivisible natural element here.
And I think of the Taj Mahal. Buddhist temples. The Wailing Wall.
The Parthenon. The Coliseum. The Empire State Building. The Hoover
dam. Dachau.
